Easy Ways to Enjoy Star Wars Activities with Kids

Our family loves all things Star Wars. Movies, books, and toys with Star Wars themes are often the first choice in our all-boy home. Playtime is infused with light saber duels and talk of "the Dark Side".

Plus, we always look forward to celebrating Star Wars Day (May the 4th Be With You!).

Over the years, I found it challenging to have Star Wars-inspired activities that all 5 of my boys could enjoy. There's an 11-year gap between oldest to youngest. Playdough was one of the best ways to keep everyone busy and happy.

When my youngest (Xman) was a toddler, he'd see and hear his big brothers talk about Star Wars. I figured if I selected a theme of interest to big brothers that they'd be much more likely to do playdough time with little bro. Xman would get such a kick out of doing activities with them plus I'd get a bit of time to catch my breath 😉

Although we often made homemade playdough, making white is a challenge. (And you "need" pure white for BB-8 and R2-D2 - or so I'm told!) So, I got these supplies to make it easier to get started:

Creative Ideas and Activities for Using These Printable Cards

My initial intention for this type of activity was to use the Star Wars cards for playdough fun. My boys have been having a blast, spending their free time creating mini-Star Wars characters and weapons. As we played with these cards, we came up with a few other ways to use:

  • Memory game (print out two copies)
  • Cards for story time
  • Picture prompts for writing sentences and stories
  • Art (sketch the characters individually or in scene)
  • Cut & glue onto popsicle sticks for story props
  • Scavenger hunt (hide the cards and give clues for finding)

As far as playdough (or any other craft, for that matter), I am not a stickler for details. I prefer to allow the boys to learn from the process and let their imaginations soar. These Star Wars cards are merely a starting point, a gentle guide to spark creativity that they sometimes like to have with hands-on fun activities.

It's been so incredible watching the boys spend time together and having such simple, screen-free fun. Now that my boy are older, I love to hear them chat about their shared memories of these types of easy and frugal activities.
