Have you ever made a list of all the things every homeschool mom needs? Or at least the things you need?

I have a big list - A BIG ONE! I also asked my readers what were the things they thought every homeschool mom needs the most. I was surprised that money wasn't one of them! LOL! Because you know, we homeschool moms love to shop for homeschool stuff, right? ALWAYS!

Let's just say homeschooling is amazing but it isn't a bed of roses.

Check out what Ana from They Call Me Blessed has found to be the Top 3 Things Every Homeschool Mom Needs For Herself, found on 20 Days of Homeschooling Encouragement.

I was so glad when my friend Amy Milcic invited me to be part of this 20 Days of Homeschooling Encouragement blog party because, above all other needs, when I asked my readers what was the number one need, ENCOURAGEMENT came as the number 1!

The #1 Thing Every Homeschool Mom Needs is Encouragement!

Yes, we need encouragement, lots of it, because our days are not a breeze. Just because we stay at home that does not mean we do not work!

To be honest with you, a stay-at-home or work-from-home homeschool mom has many jobs, not just one! For instance, here are all the jobs I currently have:

  • I teach a kindergarten class, a 1st-grade class, and a 2nd-grade class at our local homeschool, Monday to Friday, mornings and afternoons from 9am to about 3 or 4pm. Most days, I'm required to also work as a principal and a librarian as well.
  • I do multiple other work shifts beside teaching, some of them in alternating days, thankfully:
    • I work in a local laundry as many times a week as is needed.
    • I work in a kitchen as a cook 2 or 3 times a day, and 7 days a week I work as a housemaid.
    • I do multiple shifts as a driver and work full time as a babysitter, and no, I'm not allowed to take breaks or naps. Oh, how I wish!
  • And during these past four months, I've been working as a blogger, but that's just a small side job.

All of these juggling from one place to another all day-and did I mention they are all volunteering jobs with no pay? Well, not the blogger one. Thank God!

Motherhood alone is exhausting! But you know what? It is also filling! Why? Because this crazy busy long life career called motherhood is amazing and it is so rewarding! Every sacrifice, every selfless act, every act of surrender to those moments you just need to endure it a little bit more will eventually bear fruit!

Every homeschool mom needs to be encouraged!

Rarely a mother's week passes by without a prayer, a tear, a sleepless night... moms, homeschoolers or not, battle fears, worries, anxiety, and discouragement in some season or in many seasons of their lives.

Just as a car will not move without fuel (and the proper one!), also a homeschool mom will not be able to go far without constantly refilling her tank. And I am not talking about caffeine! Moms need encouragement, moms need a pat on the back once in a while and they need to hear words like:

"You're are doing great!"

"Thank you for all you do for our children!" or something like...

" Well done love, I'm proud of you."

Every homeschool mom needs to hear these things. These little words of affirmation and gestures of appreciation get us far. We need encouragement from friends, siblings, parents, in-laws and even strangers. We need cheerleaders to assure us that we can do this and all our work and sacrifice is not in vain.

The #2 Thing Every Homeschool Mom Needs is Community!

We can't do this alone! We need the support from each other. We need someone we can reach out to when we are in doubt when our homeschool is not going ion the direction we planned, we need others to keep us motivated and accountable - especially accountable! I don't know about you, but I can get off track so easily.

In community is where motivation and inspiration happens. It is such a blessing to find an amazing homeschool online community where not only one finds support but also make new friends.

I have grown more in these past 7 months fellowship with other homeschool moms at the HomeschoolScopes.tv group and at the Rock Your Homeschool Facebook group than in my all 3 years of homeschooling my kids. Having a good support system is like having cheerleaders 24/7 to help you go through your battles. I can't help but to think of how Aaron and Hur help Moses' arms up when he grew weary while the Israelites were fighting the Amalekites in the Bible:

"So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set." Exodus 17:11-12

Every homeschool mom needs someone to hold their arms up right when they feel weary!

What a beautiful illustration of what support is and what it means in our homeschool journey! Mothers feel weary from time to time, this is when we need community support the most. I know these women will hold my hands up when I become weary. They will be there for me and guess what? They will be there for you too!

The #3 Thing Every Homeschool Mom Needs is Time For Herself!

Ok, that might not be a revelation for you but boy, it was for me!

First, you need some self-care! There is nothing wrong with putting yourself first. You should never feel guilty about taking 30 minutes a day for yourself, or even an hour! When you take good care of yourself you will be a lot less cranky to take care of your family!

Every homeschool mom needs to take good care of herself first so she can take a better care of others!

It doesn't take much to care for oneself daily, just 15-30 minutes will be enough to make a big difference in your day. Here is what my daily morning self-care look like:

  • Wake up (don't get up yet!)
  • Drink water
  • Read the Bible (sometimes one Bible verse is enough to speak to me)
  • Or read a page or two of an inspirational book that motivates me to be a better person, a better mom, a better wife... you got the picture, right?
  • Get up and listen to a podcast or an audiobook while doing some stretches or walking on a treadmill...
  • After my mind, spirit and soul are fed then is time to feed my body!
  • Have breakfast. a nutritious one! Not just coffee.
  • Then is time for Rock Your Homeschool morning show on Periscope!! If you are not following Amy on Periscope, click here to start now. This is the highlight of my mornings!

Second, find yourself a hobby! Having a hobby has really helped me to switch off my busy brain for a while and relax by doing something that is for myself, for a change! Anything you enjoy to do on your own will do it!

Every homeschool mom needs a hobby!

  • Reading
  • coloring
  • writing
  • planning
  • drawing
  • journaling
  • painting
  • knitting
  • dancing
  • jogging...

What is that one thing you can do on your own that will help you turn the busy mom brain off and relax?

Even if it is for an hour or two a week! We need to intentionally schedule time for ourselves to do the things we enjoy. Bible Journaling is my hobby. By simply spending time alone meditating on the Word and writing or drawing on a notebook or journal (nothing fancy) it refreshes me and fills me with encouragement, inspiration, faith, hope and love to carry on the mission of motherhood, homemaking, blogging and more!
